Monster Me

#06 Manège to be released APR. 18, 2021 Before 10:00AM EST.

This NFT series explores our inner online persona. Whether tied to our own personal circle or completely anonymous, the creatures serve as faces for virtual selves. These monsters, once captured in a token, can serve you in any way you please. They do prefer living in profile pictures.

Each release will feature one monster. Once the auction has ended, I will announce the date and time of the next release.

about Monster Me

The Monster Me NFT Icon series came out of the necessity of creating an anonymous online persona. During the rise of the Covid-19 pandemic, a sharp rise in Asian xenophobia started presenting itself in the US. I also observed this rise across other nations, but my worry for my mother kept the sights locked a lot closer. Like many first-generation Vietnamese immigrants, my mother owns a nail salon. With her being over an hour away and in a small southern town— I was worried. I would scour local message boards, google reviews, and Facebook groups to debunk all/any misconceptions people may have about the virus. As hate crimes would rise and media coverage being non-existent, I felt an obligation as an Asian American Immigrant with decent English proficiency to say something. Anything. I created the first monster as my profile picture in April of 2020, which I have unfortunately discarded during a fit of rage and frustration. I felt a strange loss during this process and realized I had attached myself to this mask in a sense. It served as my protective armor, but I had also come to associate the creature with an alternate version of myself.

The Icon series as it stands today serve as a reminder that you have a voice that matters. The creatures can now serve you and whatever you deem them useful for, whether that be shitposting on Reddit to a heated argument on who has the best offensive tackle. I continue to use mine to combat Asian hate, and I urge you all to do the same.
